How to Dream of Prophet Muhammad (salAllah alaihi wasalam)

This is part of a speech by Shaikh Muhammad Hassan

[Watch here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RABMyhT6zo]
:

"By Allah the Prophet (sal Allah alaihi wasalam) does not come except those he loves.

Listen up, there are those who go to visit the Prophet (saws), and there are those who the Prophet (saws) comes to visit.

Do you remember the story of the honorable woman, the mother - she is now - we ask Allah to bestow on her vast mercy. The honorable, precious mother who sent her son to me - I've said this before, and I love saying it.

The mother sent to me her son during a lesson in Al-Mansurah.

He told me, "Forgive me, Sheikh that I have to say this."

I told him, sure say it.

He said "My mother (the son's mother) told him, "Go to Muhammad hassan and tell him, 'Muhammad Hassan, my mother is waiting for you to come visit her tonight.'"

I told him, "Go ahead lets go."

We went to a very remote village, to a house built of clay, a poor household.

In it was a woman who has reached 70 years of age.

Masha Allah she does not stop - I'm not going to tell you that for a miniute, or even a second.

By Allah never stops invoking blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

She NEVER ceases to invoke blessings upon the Prophet, EVER.

She would look at you, greet you, and then rush back to invoking blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and persist in it, and so on.

I felt such pity and lowliness next to this precious, honrable mother.

So i said to her, "Oh, my mother, you called for me, and I came. Now tell me, what's bothering you? And with Allah's permission, I am promising you then next week, I will bring one of our medical brothers in the speciality that you need, and he will check up on you right here."

So she looked up and she smiled a lovely smile.

She's more than 70 years old, and she told me, "Oh my son, oh my son, I know my illness and my remedy. I know my illness and my remedy."

So i told her "By Allah, tell me."

She told me, "Oh my son, our master the Prophet hasn't come to me in my dreams for three whole nights!"

I told her, "He hasn't come to you for three whole nights? Does he come to you every night?!"

She said to me, "By Allah, if a single night passes without seeing him, I become ill. I've been ill for three nights. I havn't seen the Prophet, peace and blessings upon him."

Remember when I told you "Your intention has been truthful, so your dream was truthful. And if your love for the Prophet (sal Allah alaihi wasalam) is true, then you shall see the Messenger of Allah!"

For he is the one who said, "Whoever sees me in dreams, has truly seen me, for the Shaytan cannot take my form."

(a fatwa from IslamQA):

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because he said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has really seen me, because Shaytaan cannot appear in my image." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 5729).

Rabee'ah ibn Abi 'Abd al-Rahmaan said: "I heard Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) describing the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He said: 'He was of average height, not too tall and not too short, with a pinkish colour, not very white and not dark, and his hair was neither very curly nor very straight. The Revelation came to him when he was forty years old, and he stayed in Makkah for ten years after the Revelation came, then in Madeenah for ten years. When he died, there were no more than twenty white hairs on his head and in his beard." (al-Bukhaari, 3283).

Al-Baraa' ibn 'Aazib said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was broad shouldered and had thick hair coming down to his shoulders and earlobes. He was wearing red garments. I have never seen anything more beautiful than him." (Reported by Muslim, Kitaab al-Fadaa'il, Baab Sifat Sha'r al-Nabi (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), no. 2338).

'Ali said: "He was neither tall nor short, and had large hands and feet. He had a large head and was big-boned, and the thin line of hair (starting from his chest and extending to the navel) was long. When he walked, he would lean forward, as if he was walking downhill. I have never seen anyone like him, before or since." (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 3570, who said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth).

Jaabir ibn Samurah said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was dalee' al-fam, ashkal al-'ayn and manhoos al-'aqib." Shu'bah said: "I asked Maalik, 'What is dalee' al-fam?' He said: 'Wide-mouthed.' I asked, 'What is ashkal al-'ayn?' He said, 'Big-eyed.' I asked, 'What is manhoos al-'aqib?' He said, 'His heels were not fleshy.'" (Saheeh Muslim, Kitaab al-Fadaa'il, 2339).

"Do not cry for me Mother..." [A Poem for Abu Sabaaya]

Asalaam alaikum

By Mahmoud al-Misri (referring to the imprisonment of Abu Sabaaya & false charges against him);

The poem is written by Abu Muhammad Al-Maqdisi, who wrote it to his mother who was saddened and crying for his imprisonment.

I felt it fits the situation of our dear brother, his love for this Deen, and how his family must be affected by this (ofcourse translation of poems ruin their beauty ... I had to change words here and there).

لا تـبكني أمـاه وابـك بلوعة ديـناً جـريحاً ما عليه بــواكيا

Do not cry for me, Mother, rather cry heavily [instead] * for a wounded religion no one is crying for

ما كنت يومـا رغم حبسي جاثيا فـلأجل ربـي أسـتطيب عذابيا

Never in spite of my imprisonment did I kneel * and for the sake of my Lord I shall enjoy this punishment

أمـاه إن خـط القـضاء منيتي بـدم تحـرر فـاصبري لمصـابيا

O Mother, if my death has been decreed * then be patient for my tribulation

لله قـد قدمت روحـي راغبـا ثـمنـا ليبقى أصـل ديـني عاليا

I have willfully given my soul to Allah. * A small price to pay for my religion to remain high

وقحـمت أسـباب المنايا حاملا بيـدي لنـصرة دعـوتي أكفـانيا

I crossed the pathway of death, carrying * in my hands my Kaffan hoping to bring victory to my Religion

فالمـوت لا يـريع نفسـاً حرةً قهـرت خطوباً قـد عصفن عواتيا

For Death does not scare a free soul * [A soul] which has overcome trials coming forth as violent winds

والقيد ليس بمـوهن لي هـمتي والسجن ليـس بمحبطٍ آمــاليا [1]

Handcuffs will not lower my determination * Neither will this prison lower my hopes

يا أمّ لا تبـكي لحبسي دمعـةً وابكي لـدينٍ ما علـيه بواكيـا

[So], Mother, do not shed tears for my captivity * And weep instead for this Religion which no one is weeping for

فالسجن خير من حيـاة مذلـةٍ وأنا لـربي قـد نذرت حياتيـا

For Prison is better than a life of disgrace. * And for my Lord, I vowed my life

أنا لست أركعُ رغبةً في لقمـةٍ أو أشتكي سـوطاً يُعربد عاتيـا

I am not one to bow down for a loaf [of bread] * or one to complain of the whip tearing my shoulders

فالسجن ليس بضائري إن ضمّني والقيد ليـس معجـلاً أكفانيـا

For Prison is not going to harm me when it embraces me * And these chains will not bring my death any sooner

والسجن ليس بحابسٍ لي دعـوتي والقيد ليـس بمطفـئ أنواريـا

This prison is not going to hold back my Message * and these shackles are not going to dim my Lights

أنا هـاهنا حر برغم سلاسـلي ورنينها يشـجي ربوع فؤاديـا

I am here free, in spite of my chains * and its sounds bring life to my heart

أنا هـاهنـا عزّي هنا حريـتي فالعز قيدي والشموخ جراحيـا

Over here I find my dignity, over here I find my freedom * Dignity [can be seen] in my shackles, and determination [can be seen] in my wounds

[سأقول للسجن الذي قد ضمني ] اشدد قيودك لا تفـك وثاقيـا

I will tell this prison which has embraced me * Tighten your bonds, and do not let untie my chains

أنا هـاهنا حـر ودون قيودنـا شـعبٌ يُطأطئ للخيانة جاثيـا

I am here free, and away from these chains * is a nation which has lowered its head kneeling for Treachery

يا سجن إنّي قد عشقتُ سلاسلي هذي السلاسل والقيود سلاحيا

O Prison, I have fallen in love with these chains * these chains and bonds are my weapons [and source of strength]

يا سـجن إنـّي قد ألفتُ زنازني هـذي الزنازن والظلامُ ردائيـا

O Prison, I have gotten used to this jail cell. * This cell and its darkness are my cover and clothing

أنا في قيودك شامـخٌ في عـزتي والحرُ يخنع خلف سورك راضيـا

I am in your chains steadfast with my dignity * and those “free” outside your walls are happy in their disgrace

قد حددوا عيشي على قضبانـهم وبظـلِ قيدك مولدي ووفاتيـا

They restricted my life between these bars * and within the shadows of these chains is by birth and death

وعلى جدارك قد خططت ملاحمي حفراً بظفري والـمداد دمائيـا

On your walls I have recorded my struggles * with my nails I have carved it, and my blood I used as ink

بدمي خططت براءتي من كفرهم ولأجل ذا ضـاقت عليّ بلاديـا

With my blood I have written my dissociation from their Kufr * And for that reason my own country have narrowed and closed in on me

يا أمّ مـالك تذرفـين الدمع لا لا تفعلي أفديـك أمـاً حانيـة

O Mother, do not shed these tears over me, don’t * May I be scarified for you, what a kind loving mother you are

يا أمّ لا تبكـي لقيدي واصبري فالفجـر يشرق عن قريبٍ آتيـا

O Mother do not cry because of my shackles and be patient * Since Dawn will soon come bringing forth its light

والكفر مندحـرٌ بإثْر جيوشهم والنور من ديني يُشـعشع زاهيـا

Disbelief will soon disintegrate with its armies * And the light from my Religion [will remain] brightly shining

والحـقّ منتصرٌ برغم سجونـهم والقيد منكسـرٌ وديـني عاليـا

And the Truth will prevail, in spite of their jails * And the cuffs would soon break, and my Religion will remain high

أبو محمدالمقدسي - رمضان 1417- سجن سواقة في الاردن

In any case, I ask Allah to grant our respected brother Tariq patience and steadfastness.

I ask Allah, Subhanhu wa Ta’ala, to grant him and his family patience and steadfastness, as well as our imprisioned sisters and brothers everywhere in the world along with their families.

I ask Allah not to make this tribulation as a Fitna for them, and ask Him to make it a reason for the elevation of their ranks in the hereafter.

The Boy & the Cookie

“…I knew him myself. I knew him, and I don’t say he was from the Children of Isra’il. No! He was from the sons of this land. I knew him personally.

He would weep intensely. He would weep intensely, and he would never have the Qur’an recited in his presence except that he would cry, and become humble and soft. He was an amazing, strange person.

He memorized the Qur’an when he was only twelve! However, he was older due to the Words of Allah and his knowledge of Allah, and I don’t place him higher in status than Allah would.

I tell you about him while I have placed a condition on myself that I don’t tell you other than what I saw with my own eyes. The second condition I placed on myself is that I don’t exaggerate in anything I say about him.

He memorized ‘Sahih Muslim’ with me in two weeks. He memorized ‘Sahih al-Bukhari’ with my third friend – we were three – in two weeks. Do you realize? I didn’t know that he had memorized al-Bukhari, and my friend didn’t know that he had memorized Muslim. He loved sincerity. He always loved as-Sirri as-Saqti. Do you know why as-Sirri as-Saqti in particular? Because as-Sirri as-Saqti used to pay a lot of attention to sincerity.

He was very good in school, and in fact excelled in it. He would only sleep between the time he got home from school until Dhuhr time. After ‘Asr, he would attend halaqahs. After Maghrib, he would attend the lessons of the scholars. After ‘Isha’ until eleven, he would study for school. From eleven – every single day – he would pray all night until Fajr.

I am not exaggerating! He is from our own sons, from our country!

Whenever he would read the Qur’an, he would cry. I would read that when some of the Salaf would read the Qur’an, they would pass out. I know the dispute among the scholars on this, but I have never seen this with my own eyes except from this youth. We would pray the Friday prayer, and the imam would recite: {“And the inhabitants of Hell called out to the inhabitants of Paradise ‘Give us a drop of water!’”} [al-A’raf; 50] And he fell down on his head, and we thought he had died.

We prayed one night at my house. I pretended that I was asleep in order to see what he would do. He came over and motioned with his hand over my eyes (to see if I was awake). He woke up at eleven, and I would sleep and wake up, sleep and wake up – and he would be standing in a rak’ah and I wouldn’t see him go down. He would then bow and I wouldn’t see him come up.

On a different night, he would read the Qur’an. When he got to this verse, in front of me: {“Indeed, it is Hell, taking away the skin of the head!”} [al-Ma’arij; 15-16] he cried and passed out. I woke him up, and he got up and made ablution and prayed. When he got to the verse: {“Indeed, it is Hell, taking away the skin of the head!”} he again cried and passed out. I woke him up, and when he got to it a third time, he recited it and passed out again and didn’t wake up until the call for Fajr prayer.

He would recite the entire Qur’an every three nights in secret while praying at night, and would do so every seven days openly during the day. I am not exaggerating, as he would do this in front of me. And by Allah, he would remember Allah in a single day more than 12,000 times! I counted them myself while sitting with him – 12,000 times! I would ask him: “Why?” He replied: “I don’t want Abu Hurayrah to have done more than me.” He had jealousy, jealousy when it came to worship!

He was only seventeen at the time, when he was at this level!

I didn’t know what to say about him! Whenever he would come across a text to memorize, I would say: “I challenge you to memorize this.” He would say: “Don’t challenge me!” I would try to fire him up, and say: “I challenge you!” The next day, he would come and recite the text to me as if it were just his name. If he made just three mistakes, he would not consider himself to have memorized it. Three mistakes!

This was a person who would repent! If only you knew his sin! I will tell you later what his sin was.

If we lost hope in a youth – we would give da’wah to someone and lose hope in him, we didn’t know, and I am speaking about myself and Allah Knows best about others – he was someone whose supplication was answered in front of seventeen people who bear witness to this, in more than one incident. If we lost hope in a youth, we would tell him to go and give him da’wah. By Allah, after just two days, this person would be guided. He would walk with him for just two days. The first day, the second day, and he would then be praying in the first row! Whether he was a smoker, a drug user, etc., he would become upright right away by the Permission of Allah. This is blessing! Blessing!

One day, he would pray behind a scholar in the southern region who you know of who would elongate the prayer. So, he would elongate it, following the Sunnah. He would lead the people in prayer, and a man came and hit him on the back with a stick while he was bowing, in front of me. After the prayer, he looked at him and asked: “Why did you hit me?”

He replied: “You have whisperings! You make us pray too long!”

The imam replied: “You are healthy! You are healthy!”

The man replied: “How do you know I’m healthy?”

This youth then raised his hands to Allah – as soon as he raised his hands, my heart stopped – and said: “O Allah, take away his health until he knows its value and prays properly in front of You!” It was the ‘Asr prayer, and I swear by Allah that this man didn’t pray Maghrib with us. He was at home, laying in bed. After a few weeks, I saw him and said: “Fear Allah! The man is at home in bed! I ask you by Allah…” He said: “My brother, I didn’t mean to do this!” I said: “Ask Allah to cure him.” By Allah, the man prayed with us the next prayer!

In the Haram, he would wear thick glasses. I am telling you that this is a repenter from our times! I know him! He is my friend! I am greater than him in age, but he is greater than me. I don’t place him in status higher than where Allah has placed him.

They were in the Haram, and he was wearing glasses, and they bothered him. He said: “I can’t go to Palestine one day with glasses.” So, he went to the well of Zam Zam in front of the people – they were seventeen people – and he took off his glasses, took the Zam Zam water, said: “O Allah, make it a cure for my vision,” and drank it. He then said: “Allah is the Greatest!” and threw the glasses away in front of everyone! They wanted to test him, and they pointed to a clock that nobody could see, they asked him: “Can you tell us what time it is?” He said: “The time is such and such.” Exact! He would read the Qur’an…his vision was returned 100%!

Indeed, it is supplication! “…and if he asks Me, I will Give him.”

The incidents are many, but the time doesn’t permit me to tell them all.

You know, one day I asked him about his sin. When did I ask him? One day, he recited the verse: {“On the day when some faces will be brightened and some faces will be darkened…”} [Al ‘Imran; 106] By Allah, he cried to the point that my heart was as if it was being torn. I said to him: “The Messenger of Allah said: “The worst of people is he who is asked by Allah and is not responded to,” and I ask you by Allah: what makes you cry like this?” I want to cry like him, people! I want to feel the happiness he felt!

He said: “I committed a sin in my life.”

I asked him: “What is this sin?”

Do you know what his sin was? You will laugh at yourself. I will explain it to you. He said: “When I was in second grade, I went into a store and took a cookie and ate it, and the Fire is more deserving of a body that is nurtured on what is forbidden (i.e. because the cookie didn’t belong to him).”

He died. He died, may Allah have Mercy on him, when he was only twenty. He died because of a stray bullet that someone fired accidentally while playing with a weapon. A bullet was accidentally fired and entered the body of this youth, killing him. He died as a righteous person, and I assume him to be such.

He died, and that was it. It was all over.

However, his life didn’t die. And by Allah, were it not the fact that he asked me by Allah to not reveal his name, I would have revealed it…”

[May Allah reward my good friend Muhammad who showed me this clip, and make me, him, and all who read this story like this incredible youth.]

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal's Refusal of Appointment of Judge

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal's Refusal of Appointment of Judge

It is reported on the authority of Imam al-Shafee' that he said to Ar-Rasheed:

"Yemen is in need of a judge." He said: "Choose a man and we will appoint him to it." So Imam al-Shafee' said to Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal, who was visiting him among a number of seekers of knowledge: "Will you not accept (the post of) judge in Yemen?" But he refused vehemently to accept it, saying: "I only visit you for the sake of (acquiring) the knowledge which causes me to abstain from the life of this world. Do you order me to accept the position of judge? Were it not for the knowledge, I would not speak to you after today." Upon hearing this Imam al-Shafee' became embarassed."

Abdullah Azzam's Encounter with Hypocrite Jinn's in Ramadan

A Simple Ramadhan

By Shaykh Abdullah Azzam

O you who believe! Fasting was prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become pious. Fast for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number should be made up from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have to feed a poor person. But, whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you knew.’ [al-Baqarah, 183-184]

It is, as the Lord of Glory Said, a fixed number of days. Rather, it is a fixed number of hours! The month of Ramadhān is either 720 hours, or 696 hours, and every minute of it has a price and a value. The Salāf and the Companions – may Allah be Pleased with them – used to await these days of Ramadhān from the year to year, as it has been reported in a narration that the Companions used to say, when Rajab had arrived:

‘O Allāh, assist us in worshiping You in Rajab and Sha’bān, and allow us to witness Ramadhān.’

Because Ramadhān is the annual occasion of the cleansing of the soul, spirit, and body, its effect on the human spirit and body is not that profound. The acts of worship of the soul are many, and as much as the body receives its share of pain during the course of its worship, it will receive its share of light. That is why Jihād is the uppermost peak of Islām; because it is the most painful and difficult of the acts of worship. Its reward is greater, its effect on the soul deeper, and its result in building the spirit and in ingraining Tawhīd in it is great.

Therefore, there are acts of worship dealing with one’s wealth. However, its effect on the soul is usually less than the effect of an act of worship dealing with the body. So, Zakāh has a deep effect on the soul, as it purifies it from covetousness. However, you cannot truly sympathize with the poor person unless you feel his pain, live as he lives, and starve as he starves. If you starve, then you feel your body becoming stronger and more durable. At that time, you become joyous that you were able to sacrifice something and purify yourself from covetousness.

Jihād is the same way: Jihād with one’s wealth does not purify one’s soul in the same way as Jihād with one’s self does. And because of this, Islām did not relieve any of the Companions of the obligation of Jihād with his self, no matter what his position in society, and no matter how good his reputation, such as in the case of ‘Uthmān.

And the Salaf - may Allah be Pleased with them – would calculate Ramadhān by the minute. They were praying behind Ubayy bin Ka’b – and ‘Umar bin al-Khattāb was praying Tarawih behind him – and they would require sticks to support themselves on as a result of his long standing in the prayer, and the Companions would say: ‘We fear that we will miss the suhur praying behind Ubayy, and we fear that the Fajr time will come, causing us to miss the Blessed Meal [suhur] so, let our children rush to prepare the meal.’

And it was reported from some of the Tabi’in, and those who came after them, in regards to their Qur’ān and prayer, that some of them would complete reciting the Qur’ān sixty times in Ramadhān, and this was specifically narrated in regards to al-Imām ash-Shafi’ī; he used to complete it once during the day, and once during the night. Some of them would complete it once during the night and day, and others would complete it once every three days, until they reached the last ten days, in which they would seclude themselves in the mosque, completing it once a day.

And to complete the Qur’ān in a day is easy, if we keep in mind that to recite the Qur’ān slowly (tartil) takes about 24 hours, and a quicker recitation takes about ten hours. It is possible for the one who has memorized the Qur’ān to complete one juz’ in 20 minutes, allowing him to complete all thirty ajzāh in ten hours. I was told by Abū al-Hasan an-Nadawi, ‘I saw my teachers, and some of them would not speak at all in Ramadhān. Rather, they would only engage in worship; either Qur’ān or prayer. If someone were to speak to them, they would count out their words, and calculate them by the minutes and seconds.’

So, Ramadhān consists of fasting and prayer.

Because of this, the Salaf, such as al-Imām Mālik, would seclude themselves until the time of giving a class, saying: ‘Verily, Ramadhān is for praying and reciting the Qur’ān.” Some of them would say: ‘Ramadhān is praying, giving charity, and reciting the Qur’ān.’

And in Ramadhān, the Gates of Paradise are opened, and the Gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are chained up. This is something that actually happens, as one of my trustworthy friends who used to have contact with the jinn - but has since repented – informed me,

‘When I would ask the jinn who I would work with to relay to me any news, they would say: ‘We are inactive in Ramadhān.’ I used to think that they were believing jinn, as they would pray and fast with me. However, I realized from their answer, that they were devils [i.e., disbelieving jinn].

Later, after an experiment, I confirmed for myself that they were disbelievers: I requested from them one day that they heal my cousin, so, they said: ‘She will not be cured unless she puts on a cross.’

So, I said to them, ‘You really are devils. You are from the disbelieving jinn.’

They said, ‘We are from the believing jinn.’

I said, ‘From now, we have nothing to do with each other.’

They said, ‘We will hurt you, then.’

I said, ‘I dare you to try to hurt me. We will meet at midnight at the graveyard, the most secluded and frightening place I can think of,’ and at midnight, I made ablution and prayed two rak’āhs, and went to the graveyard. I did this for three nights in a row, but the jinn were unable to even come near me.’

So, it is something physical, not simply metaphoric. The devils are chained, and they are unable to move about and cause evil between the people. The major jinn are the ones who are chained, while the minor devils are left to move about.

And Ramadhān is the Ramadhān of Jihād, so, I advise everyone of you to not fall short in a single day in Ramadhān.

I was in Qatar, or the Emirates, and I was told, ‘The brothers in America called, asking if you could go spend the last ten nights with them.’ I said, ‘Subhān Allāh! I spend the last ten nights in America, and I leave Jalalabad, Qandahar, and Kabul erupting? The hour in these places is better than standing in prayer for sixty years, and I go and enter America, even if in Ramadhān?’ And because of this, for the duration of my stay here, especially in the last five years, I always loved to spend every Ramadhān outside of Peshawar, and to not enter Peshawar unless it was necessary. I would spend it either in the training camp in Sada, Jadji, or any other place, so that it would be written for me as a Ramadhān of ribāt, and the Ramadhān in the land of ribāt is a thousand times better than Ramadhān outside of the land of ribāt, as the Prophet [saw] said, ‘Ribāt for one day in the Path of Allāh is better than a thousand days in any other place, even if one were to fast all day and pray all night.’ [at-Tirmidhī and an-Nasa'ī]

So, brothers, whoever of you stays in Peshawar, then let him comply with the following daily program;

Do not stay up late in Ramadhān, as Ramadhān is the time of praying, fasting, and seeking Allāh’s forgiveness during the morning hours. So, break your fast in your homes on some dates or water, or in the mosque, and provide some dates and water in the mosques for those who might break their fast there, and glad tidings to the one who provides food for the one breaking his fast; ‘Whoever provides food for the fasting person, then, he will have the same reward as the fasting person, without the fasting person’s reward being diminished at all,’ even if it is only on a piece of a date, so, for this, let the competitors compete for this great reward.

I was in Qatar, and some of the good-doers said to me, ‘We wish to provide food for a thousand fasting Mujāhidin for all of Ramadhān. How much does each Mujāhid require in Ramadhān?’ I said, ‘He requires three Qatari Riyal or Dirham.’ Suddenly, a check was being written for 90,000 Qatari Riyal, with him saying, ‘This is the cost of food for a thousand Mujāhidin in Jalalabad, and I ask that you alert me of its arrival.’ When it arrived the next day, I was surprised to hear the phone ring, with him telling me, ‘The money for the food of two thousand more is on the way. Feed them rice and meat, as they are the best of foods.’

Comply with this program, and it is easy: break your fast in the mosque, then pray the Maghrib. Return to your homes, eat as much as Allah has Willed for you to eat, and after that, make istighfar while you are awaiting the time for ‘Isha’. Then, pray the ‘Isha’ and Tarawih in the mosque, then, return to your homes. Eat the suhur, and be particular about this time. In addition to it being a blessed meal, the best time to make istighfar is in these early morning hours.

So, after the suhur, rush to make ablution and perform some Tahajjud, and increase in your connection with the Lord of Glory, ‘Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, Asking, ‘Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?’

So, take advantage of these times – the early morning hours – in which an answered supplication is almost certain.

‘Those who are patient, those who are true, the obedient with sincere devotion in worship to Allah, and those who spend in the Way of Allah, and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night.’ [al-‘Imran, 17]

‘They used to sleep but little by night, and in the hours before dawn, they were asking for forgiveness.’ [adh-Dhariyāt, 17-18]

So, when the Fajr time enters, go to the mosque and pray there. And try, if you do not have work, to not sleep during the time between Fajr and sunrise, ‘For me to sit with a group of people after the morning prayer, remembering Allāh – the Mighty and Majestic – until the Sun rises is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from the children of Ismā’īl…” [Reported by Abū Dawūd]

After this, go and rest until midday. From midday until ‘Asr, attend to the needs of your family.

Try to generally decrease in eating, drinking, and consuming sweets, keeping in mind that you are surrounded by widows, children, and orphans who are unable to afford plain rice. Set aside your sweets, bread, and rice for such people.

Your women are also in need of cleansing their souls, and they are in need of freeing themselves for the recitation of the Qur’ān and worship. Their preoccupation with preparing food is a preoccupation from the essential activities of Ramadhān; it is a preoccupation from istighfar, recitation, and worship. So, if you pray the ‘Asr, and you have no other obligations to keep you busy, seclude yourself in the mosque until the Sun sets, and indulge in the recitation of the Qur’ān, ‘…and for me to sit with a group of people after the ‘Asr prayer, remembering Allāh – the Mighty and Majestic – until the Sun sets is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from the children of Ismā’īl.’ So, when it is time for Maghrib prayer, pray it, and return to your home.

This is a program that anyone can follow, either most or all of it. Pay close attention to these days, in particular, and pay attention to these hours. In Ramadhān, there is no time for ‘he said, she said,’ or watching television, or socialization. Do not visit one another in your houses during the nights of Ramadhān, as this constitutes wasting and theft of time of this blessed month. There is the mosque in which you are able to meet and chat in after praying Tarawih, and any of your brothers who need something from you, your meeting place is in the mosque, and your place of departure is the mosque. Do not preoccupy the people with your presence in their homes during the nights of Ramadhān…”

The Silence of the Salaf

The stories of the righteous predecessors who observed silence and were renowned for that are certainly many, but sufficient for us is al-Rabee’ ibn Kaytham – a scholar from the major Tabi’een (rahimahumullah). Ibrahim al-Taymi says, “A companion of his who accompanied him for 20 years informed me that they had never heard him (al-Rabee’) err in his speech.”

He was known for his speaking little, even in the face of calamities and fitnah. Musa ibn Sa’eed narrates that when Husayn ibn ‘Ali (radhiallaahu `anhu) was killed, a man from the companions of al-Rabee’ said: “If al-Rabee’ was ever to speak, he will surely speak today!” So he went and entered in on al-rabee’ and informed him, whereupon al-Rabee’ looked to the sky and said,

“O Allâh! Creator of the heavens and the earth! All-Knower of the Ghayb (unseen) and the seen. You will judge between Your slaves about that wherein they used to differ.” [al-Zumar 39: 46]

‘Ajeeb.

May Allaah protect us and give us the strength to refrain from excessive speech and speaking about that which does not concern us. Ameen

Golden Chains in Ahadith

Golden Chains

In ‘Sahih Muslim’ (2880), Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah narrated from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah from Habibah from Umm Habibah from Zaynab bint Jahsh that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) woke up one day and said: “Woe to the Arabs from an evil that has come closer! Today, a gap this size has formed in the wall containing Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog),” and Sufyan formed a circle with his fingers to demonstrate what was relayed to him. So, Zaynab asked: “O Messenger of Allah, can we be destroyed while there are righteous people among us?” He said: “Yes, if corruption becomes widespread.”

an-Nawawi commented in ‘Sharh Sahih Muslim’ (9/180):
“This chain of narration contains four female Companions – two of the Messenger of Allah’s wives and two of his step-daughters – narrating from each other in a continuous chain. And it is not known that any other hadith besides this combines four female Companions with each narrating from the other in a continuous chain.”

And Ibn Kathir mentioned the following gem in ‘Tafsir al-Qur’an al-’Adhim’ (2/142):

“…And we reported from the ‘Musnad’ of Ahmad a hadith that has a glad tiding for every believer that his soul will be in Paradise and will move around in it, will eat from its fruits, will see the brightness and happiness in it, and will see the honor that Allah has prepared for it, and it is reported through a mighty, great, authentic chain of narration that contains three of the four Imams of the followed madhahib, as Imam Ahmad narrated it from Muhammad bin Idris ash-Shafi’i from Malik bin Anas al-Asbahi from az-Zuhri from ‘Abd ar-Rahman bin Ka’b bin Malik from his father who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The soul of the believer is a bird hanging to a tree in Paradise until Allah returns it to his body on the day He resurrects him.”

Some more ahadith that have Ahmad narrating from ash-Shafi’i narrating from Malik:
